Point in time – Kids Timer

The Idea and Problem

Parents often struggle with getting kids to stick to morning and bedtime routines without constant reminders or screen-based solutions. Through user interviews and research with families, I discovered a need for a simple, visual, and tactile tool that empowers children to manage time independently—without relying on apps or parental intervention.

Design and Development

I designed a kid-friendly visual timer with swappable task icons, light progress indicators, and preset time buttons (5, 10, 15 minutes). The form factor is intuitive and portable, with a single-button interface that’s easy for young children to use. Prototyping and multiple rounds of testing with real kids helped simplify interaction, improve clarity, and validate design choices. The final version required durable materials, engaging visuals, and safe, responsive feedback through lights and sounds.

Launch and Impact

The product was manufactured with a Shenzhen-based partner using BPA-free plastic, and launched on Amazon in 2023. It quickly became a top seller in the Kids Clocks category. The timer has been praised for reducing parental stress, helping kids feel in control of their routines, and improving daily structure. It’s now used in hundreds of households as a screen-free tool for habit-building and time awareness.
