Kids Visual Timer : From Concept to Top-Selling Amazon Product

The Idea and Problem

This project is a complete consumer product design case study user research, industrial design, DFM, and manufacturing support for a screen-free visual timer that helps children manage morning and bedtime routines independently.

The problem. Parents rely on constant reminders or screen-based apps to keep kids on schedule. Interviews with families revealed the need for a tactile, kid-operated tool: something visual enough for a 4-year-old, durable enough for daily abuse, and simple enough to work without a parent.

Product design and development. I designed a kid-friendly visual timer with swappable task icons, LED progress indicators, and preset buttons for 5, 10, and 15 minutes. The single-button interface was validated through multiple prototype rounds tested with real children  each round simplified the interaction and improved clarity. Key engineering decisions included BPA-free ABS material selection, snap-fit assembly to reduce fasteners and cost, wall-thickness and draft optimization for injection molding, and drop-test-driven internal ribbing.

Launch and Impact

Design for manufacturing. I prepared complete production files — CAD, 2D drawings with tolerances, CMF specification — and worked directly with a Shenzhen-based injection molding partner through tooling, T1 samples, and production sign-off.

Result. Launched on Amazon in 2023, the timer became a top seller in the Kids Clocks category and is now used in hundreds of households as a screen-free habit-building tool.
